Spring 2020 FranU Admissions & Financial Aid Webinar: Session 2
Who?
Hello everybody, this is Tyler Trollan an I'm with the office of admissions at Fran you I should be joined with my colleague very soon, but we definitely want to thank you guys for joining us today, especially under the circumstances with the coronavirus. And so we appreciate your flexibility in your patience as we have been continuing to come up with ways to reach out to you to answer your questions or just to be available. So thank you so much for that.
So I'm in light of all the things that have been going on like I mentioned we've been coming up with ways to bring the frame you experience to you and Unfortunately because of the coronavirus we had to cancel our spring open house which has led to these webinars and so our goal for this time today is to give you what the frame new experiences the same information that if you were to it's in our open house we would be talking to you guys about.
But then i'ma have my colleague Miss Wendy, who is with our financial aid office to talk a little bit more about financial aid opportunities and also answering any questions about that. So it is good that you are here. We are so excited that you're interested in frame you and want to learn more. It really is a special place. It's one of formation. It's one of education, especially integrating technology with education. Specifically in the world of healthcare, since that's where most known for.
And so it's a really special place and I'm really excited to tell you a little bit more about it. And so before we go into the information, I just wanted to cover some things with you guys. As far as the structure and the format of what you're looking at right now. So of course you see with our presentation we have a Wally who is our mascot, the Wolf, and that is going to be a presentation you can follow along with the slides will be switching those over as we go through all the content and more importantly.
On the left side of your screen, you're going to see a chat box, and so what's going to happen is we are going to be filtering those questions. If you have any questions that you want to ask, please make sure to type it into the box at the bottom where it says, type your message and press enter to send and we will see the question. Our our end will read it and then we will answer the question. Please don't feel like there's a specific time that you have to type in those questions. You can do so at.
Any particular time, especially if it's something that we're covering that you have a specific question about. Please make sure to answer those as well. Alright, so without further ado we're going to go ahead and get started with our information, and so right now we're going to just kind of talk about some kind of overall things about framing you just to kind of go into our mission and the things that really make a special.
Alright, so.
A little bit about where we came from, because of course our history is something that we really pride ourselves in. We did begin as a School of Nursing back in 1923. We were founded by the Franciscan missionaries or of Our Lady, which is our namesake, where they were located behind the current state capital and so fun fact. If you didn't know this already, but the name Our Lady of the Lake came from the location around Capitol Lake, behind the state capital, which was the original.
Location and then overtime back in the 70s we moved to our current location on Essen Lane as the hospital, but on the educational aspect of it, we grew not only are nursing program, but our programs as well. We became a regionally accredited institution. We were known as Our Lady of the Lake college for most of our existence, but then in 2016 is whenever we changed our name. So a lot of people still refer to as related like college were still kind of in that transition.
But we've been about four years into that transition, so it's slow, but steady. And so why the name change? We get that question, like why the name change, and the reason why is because in higher education.
In order for an institution to be considered a University, it has to offer advanced degree program. So specifically doctoral programs and so on. Nursing anesthesia program was once a Masters degree and is now a doctoral degree. And then we also have a doctor to physical therapy and so those two pioneer the transition into a University and so with that we wanted to rebrand make ourselves known as such and decided to change our name with that rebrand. And so, for instance, missionaries of Our Lady University was then adopted which acknowledges our founding.
Order who started the entire health systems so I may be late hospital Our Lady of the Lake, Our Lady of Lords. I'm sorry in Lafayette and they have multiple hospitals and clinics across the state frame. You is how we informally referred to ourselves.
So we are located in Baton Rouge, LA. We are in the heart of the city. We are located in the Medical Center District of Baton Rouge, aware right across the street from Our Lady of the Lake Hospital which is right off of I-10. As about probably about 15 minutes, 10 minutes, maybe down the road from LSU is about 20 minutes down the road from downtown Baton Rouge were in a really great location. Everything that you need is around the area. We are a commuter campus so we do not have on campus living.
Uhm, but we do have some partnerships with apartment complexes if that is something that you are interested in, but we were very small campus. It's very easy to learn, very easy to navigate, and hopefully once our campus opens back up with the diffusion of the coronavirus, then you're more than welcome to come and take a campus tour. And we can definitely show you around.
So content to the heart of who we are. We are Catholic Franciscan University. With being Catholic. You do not have to be Catholic to come to our institution. But with that we are a different type of University where not just about education about formation as well. We're about dedication to form on our students, into Franciscan servant leaders which comes to the basis of our mission is to educate, inform Franciscan Servant leaders of all faiths and so there we go. High miss Wendy.
Hey sorry I was having technical difficulties.
Alright, no awesome. Glad you're here. So um, so about our mission. Educate, inform. For instance, server leaders. And so whenever we are talking about that mission, it's about developing the whole person and so we do a lot of service in the community. We do a lot of vocational discernment. You're going to hear that word really thrown out around campus, and that is just helping you discern what you're being called to do. We believe that Healthcare is a calling. It's not just a job that you get that you graduate and get licensing you work. It is a calling.
And we want our students to recognize that. So we like to say that it's a different type of student who graduates from frame you and we really pride ourselves that, especially whenever it comes to the relational aspect. Which brings me to our next slides. And that is, our core values are core values or the foundation. If you will, of our mission an we live by these values we can try to instill them into our students and what we believe is that our core values not only make you the best version of who you are.
But also make you the best professional. We want our students to be compassionate. We want them to be servant hearted. But we also want them to be the best professionals that they can be. And so with that like I mentioned, we do a lot of service and so we have about 130 community partners in the 17 Parish area. An most of them if not all of them are non profit organizations that serve populations that you would deem underserved or marginalized so they could be schools that could be clinics. They could also be.
Um, just nonprofit service organizations that you'll be able to go in. Give back to the community, but what's great about service learning is that not only are you giving back, but you're putting into practice what you're learning in the classroom. So it's giving purpose behind what you do, which is something that's been really, really affective, and something that our students really value after going through the experience. A lot of reflection is done in what we do, but again, it's not to push any sort of faith upon you. It's to give some purpose and meaning behind what you're doing.
So we do give back to the community a lot.
And so with us being faith based, we do also have an active campus ministries. So not only is this is this a place to become a very competent professional, but also faith filled and so if this is if you're looking for something where you're able to grow in your faith, meet other people who are walking at journey of faith with you. This is an opportunity for you to get the best of both worlds.
Alright, so I mentioned relationships and so apart of being Franciscan is that we value relationships a lot. That is part of their culture and so with that we are a very small campus, not only in physical size but also number of students.
Our average class size is about 2025 students, and so I like to use the example because we have an itch in health care of popular class that people are going to take our anatomy and Physiology because that is of course that is required to take for clinical programs for most other institutions, especially your larger ones, you're looking at at least 100 people in a class. Here at frame you're looking more like 20 to 30 Max because we prioritize those class sizes you want that individualized attention. That's what the students are really looking for nowadays.
And we're able to provide that for you here.
Well, it's also greater battery institution is that since we do have that niche in health care in the Sciences, are classes are taught in the context of healthcare professionals that you want to work in the healthcare professions, anything from your writing class, which is typically like the equivalent of an English course at other institutions. But for us we're more focused on academic writing, so you're learning things like a PA format, technical writing skills that will benefit you in the health profession, and so there's just a lot of very unique things about a lot of our programs, especially whenever it comes to the curriculum, and so definitely ask about that. It has some that you're intrigued about.
Alright now whenever it comes to the campus. We pride ourselves in having about 10,000 square feet of space completely devoted to simulation and so simulation being hands-on opportunities where you're practicing skills in a mock environment, where it's safe to make mistakes without any fatalities in about 4000 square feet of that is made up of our simulated environment teaching hospital, which is super awesome. It's a one of a kind space in Louisiana.
Devoted to clinical health care education within a simulation area, but we are focused on engaged learning. We want our students to be hands-on in the fact that we do have that niche. Most of our resources goes towards Healthcare Education, so we have equipment and technology, even even in our chemistry. In our biology labs that you wouldn't find at most other undergraduate institutions we have, we tend to have quite a bit more here, but it's not just well we have, but how we use it. And so as you see on the slide right there you see are anatomage table, which is our digital cadaver lab so.
It gives our students the opportunity to work with actual cadavers, but just in a more clean, cost efficient and efficient and effective way of studying the human body are simulated. Environment teaching hospital is made up of pretty much most of your major specialties that you would find in a hospital, so anything from ER, Med Surg, mental health, labor and delivery, pediatric ICU, different major specialties like that with our high Fidelity mannequins that can pretty much do everything that a human person can do.
And so, uh, we do tours through Seth. If you're ever interested in doing so. So really cool space. And then Lastly, we have our physical therapy gym, which was built probably about three years ago now to cater to our doctor to physical therapy program. Whenever we started that, Ansar PTA Anne are deep program uses that space. That is the actual gym that you see in the photo. So it's State of the art. It includes everything that you would see in a PT clinic or gym.
Come as well as all of your different modalities in rehabilitation and so this is something really, really cool that we have to prepare you for the next step.
Alright, and so with us being a private University be there is that stigma that you know we tend to be more expensive than public institutions. Which is true. We are on the higher end, however we do. We do prioritize affordability. We want to make sure our students have the option to come in for a new if they wanted to. So we do have the tuition levels of being about the most affordable private for your University in Louisiana.
And while we still are a little bit above public, institutions in the area, the margin is actually quite low. In addition to scholarships, tops fast, but we do accept all of that a but miss Wendy is going to talk about that in a little bit.
Now we're very successful in our programs. Big thing whenever it comes to clinical programs or pass rates. So that's the pass rate for your license. Your exam for our nursing program in particular. We do hold 100% pass rates for two full years in a row. This was as of this past November 2019, and so we're really excited about that. But not only that, we do hold the Nightingale award, which was given to us by the Louisiana State Nurses Association, which recognizes our undergraduate nursing program.
As the undergraduate nursing School of the year in Louisiana, and so that goes to our job placement pass rates of the way we teach our students our curriculum, alot of things went into this award than just the pass rate. So we hold that in very high regard. But if you're not interested in nursing, we do have 100% pass rates in multiple of our other programs are medical lab science program has 100% pass rate for 12 years in a row. PTA radiologic technology. All of our other programs, most of them.
Are very high on the calibers forest pass rates, going success rates and even job placement rates as well.
Alright, so we do have a campus life. We have ways to get involved. Any University, any recruiter is going to.
Suggests engagement on the campus. That's what's going to make your experience. That's how you're going to meet your friends that are going to be friends for your rest of your life, especially if you're wanting to work in Healthcare. It's a very small world in the healthcare industry, and so networking is a big thing, so we do have ways to get involved. Student organizations from campus ministry social professional. We have our student Government Association that puts on monthly social events, which you will see in the photos right here. We have our annual crawfish boil or Oktoberfest Turkey Bowl.
Other picture in the bottom centers are biology student organization and they do a lot of service out in the community but also some professional development and so you have your wider wider a sorry of opportunities for you to get involved. Get networked, especially on a small intimate campus like ours and so it's really family, family oriented and we want our students to get involved to get connected.
Are guaranteed admission, so this is something unique to frame you, especially whenever it comes to our clinical programs.
So essentially I'm not going to go into too much detail, but for students who are either transferring, are coming from high school, there are certain criteria that you must meet that can give you the opportunity to have a guaranteed spot into the clinical phase so clinical programs are competitive, so you're admitted into the University to take your prerequisites are required, but then you also have the clinical requirements that you have to meet in order to have a spot and more than likely there are more applicants than there are spots.
So this guaranteed clinical admission is huge, and so if you want more information about that, please reach out to us in the office of admissions and we can give you a little bit more detail. Does it? Varies by programmed and so that's something that we do have.
So Speaking of admission requirements, we have two ways of entry. We have our first year freshman, which that includes students coming from high school or if you're at another University or college and you have less than 30 credit hours completed, you would be admitted under the following requirements, which is a 2.5 high school GPA and also a 20 on the AC T composite score. That's all that we need. If you meet the requirements you're in for transfer students transfer means that you have.
Over 30 credit hours completed at the point of application and all that we need for that is 2.0 cumulative College GPA. We do not require the high school transcript or AC T score with transfer students just for first time freshmen transfer. We only need college transcripts.
Alright, so that's what I have from the admission side, just kind of a general overview of frame you and who we are. And so again, if you have any questions, please feel free to type those in the chat box. We if we will get to those later at the end of the web and or if any questions come up. So we will make sure that all questions are answered before the web and R ends and so with that I want to introduce Miss Windy she is with our financial aid office and so she is a colleague of mine that typically does this presentation with me at our open house.
And so I will hand it over to her of for the financial aid pisane. I want to reiterate any questions, especially if it's specific to what she's talking about. Type those in and I'll make sure to forward those over to her. So windy, I will hand it over to you.
Hey Wendy, make sure you turn your microphone on.
There you are.
OK, I have it now. I had muted it when you were talking. Yeah OK.
So in order to give financial aid.
You would have to do a fast well, the faster becomes available every year in October on October 1st. So if you want to do the fast as close to that date as possible because some programs are limited an you want to do that during your senior year. So if you're a junior you you wouldn't do it during your junior year, you wait until you become a senior, but if you were to go to friend, you are school code is 031062. Whenever you do the fast without the application for federal aid.
Some state aid like tops and it's also the application for some institutional aid. Some campuses will have uhm scholarships that require financial need, so that's why you would need to do the fasfa so they can determine your eligibility.
Oh sorry, so the Pell Grant. Whenever you apply for the fast food the Pell Grant is a grant that students can get. Usually those students have low income and you have to be working on your first Bachelors Degree.
Caleb Kleinpeter
08:21:24 PM
We cannot hear wendy
And you get awarded the Pell Grant is considering entitlement, so the amount when you do your fast but they will tell you how much you will qualify for. Just be careful that amount that they're telling you is for the year, so that amount that would be listed for the year you would get half in the fall in half in the spring. Sometimes students get confused and they think that amount is what they're going to get per semester. So, but that amount on that student aid report, it's going to be for the whole year. The Pell Grant can range from 6 around $600 to six 6100.
Something like that.
Tyler Trahan
08:21:36 PM
Can you hear her now?
Um and it's based on the number of hours that you take, the amount that they tell you that you qualify for is if you're going to be a full time student, so you just keep that in mind if you enroll as a part time student, then you would get half of the Pell Grant amount.
Oh
Can you hear me now?
Caleb Kleinpeter
08:21:54 PM
No
I'm.
No, Wendy that can't hear you, uhm?
Let's see, sorry about that guys.
I have my microphone off mute.
OK.
Unless I'm just having a slow connection.
OK.
Caroline Gulotta
08:22:20 PM
We can hear you.
OK, well we have some people that can hear you, Wendy.
OK.
I'm so Caleb. I'm not sure if it's something maybe on your end.
Madeline Jee
08:22:38 PM
Can we get the Pell Grant and a scholarship?
Wendy, can you go ahead and answer this question right here from Madeline? Can we get the Pell Grant and a scholarship?
Caleb Kleinpeter
08:22:55 PM
We hear tyer
Tyler Trahan
08:23:01 PM
Great!
Yes, you sure can. Uhm, the Pell Grant is considered an entitlement, so you're guaranteed to get that pill Grant and the scholarship as long as the school doesn't have a rule about it. Whatever school you're going to, you can combine the two.
Alright, Wendy, looks like we're on board now so you can go ahead and continue. Basically to recap, guys with Miss Miss Wendy said for the Pell Grant. Probably the most important thing is to remember that though award is not based on semester, it's by year.
So if you're awarded a Pell Grant, it's going to be split by semester, so that's just kind of the biggest thing to remember from the Pell Grant.
OK.
Alright, go ahead and continue.
OK, so another thing that we we have at three and you is called an SEOG grant. This grant is for our most needy students. They have to have a OEFC and they also have to be undergraduate students working on their first degree. We usually give about $1000 and you do have to be enrolled at least half time, but you if you get $1000 you get half in the fall in half in the spring.
And it is first come, first serve, so that's why you wanna do your fast for early, because whoever does their paperwork early in his eligible gets it. And then once we run out of funds, were out for the year. Typically once we start processing, usually for the 20 for the new year, we start processing sometime in March. We're hoping to start processing any day now for the 2021 year, but typically when we award SCO Gee, we run out within about a month. We don't keep it very long because the government gives us a set amount and then we run out of funding.
Well.
Federal work study work study is an opportunity for a student to have a job on campus or off campus in a community service agency.
It is also a limited funded program, but basically what I tell students to think of it is as a job to think of it like it's not going to give you money up front to go to war tuition. It's going to give you money. You're going to get paid every two weeks.
You can work up to 20 hours, so I tell students to think of it as spending money because it's not gonna go towards your tuition fee bill.
And then we also offer the Stafford loan whenever you are awarded a Stafford Loan.
You can get a subsidized loan or an unsubsidized Stafford Loan.
The subsidized loan requires finding Tony, but the unsubsidized loan does not. Some people say, well, I don't want to do the fast because I won't qualify for anything. All students can get alone, not then I'm encouraged you to get any loan debt you always want to try to get any free money first, something that you don't have to pay back before going to the loan option.
You do have to be a road half time to get a loan and the loan amount is set by the government based on your student classification in your dependency status.
And you don't pay the loans back until six months after you graduate. They do charge a small fee for processing the loan.
Parent plus parent plus loan is a loan that when the student loan is not enough to cover your tuition, your parents can take out a loan to supplement the difference. However, the Stafford loan is guaranteed that the parent loan isn't, so your parents would have to do a credit check to see if they're eligible as long as they don't have adverse credit history, they should be able to get the parent loan.
They have to also do a master promissory note, and the student must be a road halftime, but the parent can borrow up to your cost.
Of attendance.
In the student in the parent loan.
They charge a higher fee. They charge about four point 2% to process the student loan.
The next thing I want to talk about is our scholarships. We have some merit and some leadership based scholarships.
All of our scholarships you don't have to do anything to apply. The only thing that you have to do for most of our scholarships is doing admissions application. That missions application opens up in August on August 1st of your senior year. You want to apply as soon as possible because our scholarships are not unlimited. We have a set amount that we award in each scholarship and once we run out we're out of scholarships for the year. We do have two scholarships that require you to do an essay.
So.
In addition to doing that missions application, you would have to do an essay in a resume and that one is the Franciscan and the board of trustees. The Franciscan is our most prestigious award. We award that one to five students.
The committee chooses the five students that would get it, but basically this scholarship is a full ride. It covers everything is different books, but after tops pays what it's going to pay it picks up the rest of the bill and you would not have to pay anything. So this is a great opportunity.
For the student, because, um.
You're not coming out of pocket for anything.
So what do you want to add onto that? Windy is the scholarships that we're talking about are for students who are coming from high school. So if you are transferring from another institution, so if you're considered a transfer student, then we do have a transfer scholarship available that is, uhm.
First come, first served as well.
Caleb Kleinpeter
08:28:34 PM
I have intentions to come to FranU and I have already been accepted. What’s my next step, when can I start scheduling classes?
It's first come first serve. It's called that all transfer scholarship. We award 12 of those scholarships to 12 transfer students that apply. First, they have to have a 3 oh and have at least 20 four earn credits to be considered. And basically the first 12 students that apply are eligible.
OK well.
Caleb has a question.
Yeah, yeah, so I'm gonna go ahead and answer your question Caleb. So he asked. So you are planning on coming to friend you which we're super excited about, welcome and already been accepted was my next step. When can I start scheduling classes? So your next step would be to your media. Next step is to lookout for your email. Alot of our communication is going to be sent by email even if the coronavirus was not happening, it would be through email, financial aid. They're going to submit.
All information to you via email, especially if there's some extra paperwork that you have to have completed for your federal aid, for advising they're going to be sending out a email. Believe beginning of April and April 6, I believe is the date where you can start making appointments with Advisors, and then that way they can set that up because of the transition. Right now they're still working out how that's going to work on doing a phone call, or maybe a virtual advising appointment.
Because of everything. But Lastly is to set up your portal and your email and so you'll get emails about all of that. To get all that set up so, but your next course of action as far as like getting enrolled is going to be April 6. Whenever you make the phone call or you go on the website 'cause it should, we are switching everything to online now where you can get an advising appointment scheduled.
Yep.
I'm going.
Yeah, so the most important thing is to get that fast food done. Get it sent to us so we can get it processed and then we will email you. All students who do The Who do the fast but for financial aid or scholarships usually have to do the data form they need to tell us that they are on.
Say you're a transfer student. That student would need to tell us that they have tops if they have it, so we know to process their tops and Bill for them to get that money, um.
So that's one important step. Just check your email, make sure you put a good email on your ambitious application, because that's the email that we're going to use to get in touch with you. Once you become a student and you get set up through the portal, then will email you to your college email.
In the most important thing is to check. I mean the most important thing is basically check your email and just try to get everything done early.
Who?
Do we have any other questions?
Yeah, I'll give you guys just come just about a minute just if there are any burning questions out there or if you don't have anyone, I kind of think of some if while we're here.
Will give you a little bit of time to submit those.
Alright, so while you guys are still thinking for the for the last 30 seconds or so, I want to transition into. If you do have any further questions later on, how do you get in touch with us? Especially because now that we're all having to work remotely.
From our homes in. We're not in the office. How can you get in touch with us? So I'm actually going to so this was a little jumpy last time we did it for our first session, so we're going to try it again. I'm going to share my screen with you guys.
No way I can direct you to our website, so if you look on your screen now it should. Our website should appear an if you Scroll down. We have this box right here on our home screen is online student support. This is a resource that we created specifically for the coronavirus and so if you click on online student support and go to perspective student.
This has everything that you will need to get in touch with us. An easier way to get here if you want a direct link is franu.edu/connect and that will bring you to this page. We are still doing campus visits, but of course they are virtual and so it is a one on one appointment. It's just going to be a video chat with one of our recruiters including myself and so if you have individual questions, especially if you have questions about a specific program.
Then you can definitely pick a time and date that works best for you. If we're doing any future webinars which we are planning on doing future webinars, like maybe getting a student panel on board, doing a zoom conference, or about student engagement going it's a little bit more about that were kind of cooking up some things that will be listed here. If you want to contact someone specifically, especially if they're from your area, you can actually click this recruiter and admission staff.
And it'll actually go run down through location. So if you're in, say, the zone 3 area, which is the bat greater Baton Rouge area, I would actually be your recruiter and it will give you my email and my phone number and so you can look at the map right there and see exactly who your recruiter is an who you would need a contact, but you can contact anyone of us at the end of the day.
And then Lastly, if you want a more in Depth Tour of our simulated hospital, we made a video very quickly in our last week before we had to work remotely. Also are anatomage table in the physical therapy?
Um gym. You can watch those videos there, so that's a good good starting point for you guys.
Right, I'm a turn that off.
It doesn't look like we have any questions, so again. We want to thank you. Guys for joining us tonight. We're here for you. The relation relational aspect of a University does not start. Once you start classes. It starts from the very beginning. So if you need any help at all. Please don't hesitate to reach us you can go to admissions@franu.edu is our generic email or you can contact contact us individually. If you want to as well. So we look forward to having you guys on campus.
Orientation will still be having orientation. That's another email that you want to lookout for. Otherwise, we hope to see you guys at frame. You come to our welcome week. We have a welcome week in the fall and all those virtual experiences that we have made sure to lookout for those otherwise. God bless and y'all stay safe out there. OK, you have a good night.
Thank you.
